Inca Trail Packing List

Weather conditions on the Inca Trail can vary considerably during the course of a single trek. Strong sun, cold temperatures, rain and wind are all possible, particularly at higher elevations. Packing suitable clothing and equipment is therefore an important part of preparation.

Most trekking companies provide camping equipment such as tents and sleeping mats, although equipment standards vary between operators. Trekkers are usually responsible for carrying personal items in a daypack unless an additional porter service has been arranged.

Clothing should be suitable for layering due to changing temperatures throughout the day. Lightweight trekking trousers, moisture-wicking shirts and an insulating fleece or jacket are commonly recommended. A waterproof jacket is essential throughout the year, including during the dry season when rain showers can still occur.

Good quality trekking boots or trail shoes with proper grip are important due to the uneven stone steps and mountain terrain. Footwear should ideally be worn in before the trek rather than used for the first time on the trail itself.

Other commonly recommended items include:

  • Small daypack
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm layers for evenings
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Sun cream
  • Refillable water bottles or hydration system
  • Head torch
  • Basic toiletries
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal medication
  • Trekking poles if preferred

Temperatures at campsites can become cold overnight, particularly during June and July. A suitable sleeping bag is therefore important, although many companies offer rental equipment in Cusco.

Packing weight should be kept to a reasonable minimum. Large or heavy bags can become uncomfortable over several days of trekking, especially at altitude. Most trekkers find that practical clothing and a limited number of essential items are preferable to carrying unnecessary equipment.

Documents are also important. Passports must match permit information exactly and should be carried securely throughout the trek, as checks are carried out at various control points along the route.
